Can't open the program

Hi installed Badges a couple of months ago, and then tried to change the meaning of the badges to no success. Today I wanted to try again, but I can't even open the program (the manager). I get a message that can be translated to something like "badgesmanager.exe has found a problem and must terminate".

 What's happening? I run XP and SP2, and at the time I had Excel open.

 I must have the older version, but as I can't open the program I don't know. I don't want to uninstall, then I will loose all the badges I have applied so far. Can I install the newer version over the old one without loosing my badges? Or is that stupid as I am having problems now?

This message was showing only today or it was dispayed and early ?
This error occured with version 1.0.1 or 1.5 ?
Do you was have administrative rights ?
Do you have right to write to files in Badges directory ?

If you was have installed version 1.0.1 and install version 1.5, then you do not need to make any action to move badges-library to new version. This changes was made by automaticaly.

But you may "manually" create backup.
Copy file "base.ini" to any place. Install version 1.5 then in folder
c:\documents and settings\YOUR LOGIN\Application Data\Shedko Badges\
you may see file "YOUR LOGIN.INI" simply replace this file with previostly copied "base.ini"

Yesterday was the first time

Yesterday was the first time I tried to open the manager since I installed the program. There was no idea as I couldn't make the changes I wanted (to give the badges other meanings than what is standard). I wrote an email to you about that when I installed the program, but never got any response. I also followed your instructions in the forum, but that didn't work either.
I installed the program in the beginning of December 2006. The folder says Badges 1.0.1.0
I have administrative rights. I have changed in the manager before (the day I installed the program) with no problems.

If I understand you right, I should first back-up the files you mention and then install version 1.5 "on top" of the older version?

Sorry, may be your email will be fail-recognized as spam by my anti-spam system. Sorry.

Simply run installer of version 1.5 over 1.0.1. Do not uninstall 1.0.1 before installing 1.5.

If you uninstall 1.0.1 then you was lose base of assigned badges.

When installer starts it was copy your base to the right folder, and only then installer ask you to uninstall version 1.0.1, but please install ver 1.5 to another folder "Badges 1.5.0.0." because some-time windows do not allow replace in-use dll.

 

Backup is a only a our insurance. To prevent any negative situation. You may skip this step.

Even more problems

I did as you said above and now I have even more problems. I can open the manager now and all my badges are still in my folder BUT...

... the old ones don't show up in the manager

... I can't change a file with an old badge (not remove the badge or change to another)

... I can only apply one of the badges (Certified) to a new file so it shows, even though if I change to one of the other badges they show up in the manager

... I still can't change the description of the badges (nothing happens)

... the files with old badges that I have tried to change to new badges show with the old ones in the folder and the ones I tried to apply in the manager

I have a file called base.ini in my new badges directory containing a list of all the files with the old badges. I also have a file called settings.ini in the same folder with a list of all the files with new badges (that are still showing as the old ones in the folder and as the new ones in the manager...)

I have restarted the computer after installation. Lena

 PS. The above means that I can not apply a badge to a file so it shows = the program is totally useless!!!

how to fix this situation

 

Ok, this I'm do not know why this error occurred on your PC, but know how to fix this situation.

Please open manager, then page "Settings"

Settings Window

Than uncheck option "Common library and settings for all users of this computer" press "Apply" then again check this options and again press "Apply"

 

This error occurred because programm at your PC was read badges from common library but write new badges to private library.

No....

That didn't work. I got about 10 Access violations, a couple of Runtime errors and the only way I could get out of them was to crash the program. The first one was the one showed in the attached file (clipboard01). The rest I didn't copy, but I know they were all different.

PS. I tried to open the manager and do the same again, and SOME of the messages I got are in file clipboard02. Some of them I got several times, and I couldn't press Apply after checking the box again without getting a lot off messages, and then to get out of them I had to crash the program.

This is a misterious bug that was occured only on some PC and at this time we do not know why this error occurred.

Just one more...

... irritating thing:

Every time I try to open the badges manager (gets lots and lots of messages when I do), my desk-top is totally reorganized when I close it. My icons, that I have placed where I want them on the desk-top, are all in a 4 straight lines on the left side. Takes a lot of time to organize them again!! It has happened 3 times now. I just started the manager to see if my icons were showing (even though I can't see the badges in explorer, I change them anyway so when (if) we get it to work, they will be there). They were not. Not one icon. If a file doesn't have an old icon, I can see the new icon in explorer (if I apply the Certified badge) but even those didn't show.

I give up soon...
